Outdoor PE lessons at sea: watersports ideas for schools

Ideas for outdoor and adventurous PE with sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding and windsurfing in Murcia, Spain: aims, sessions, safety and prices per pupil.

Looking for a practical way to deliver outdoor activities in PE? Watersports turn the sea into a classroom: pupils work on balance, coordination, teamwork and orientation, and learn to move safely and respectfully in the natural environment. This guide has ideas for each activity, how to organise the day and what to bear in mind so it all goes smoothly.

Why the sea fits a PE programme

Physical Education curricula give their own weight to activities in the natural environment, with a focus on safety, sustainability and respect for the surroundings.

A watersports trip lets you cover, in a single day:

  • Motor skills: balance on a board, paddling coordination, adjusting the body to the wind.
  • Teamwork: in a double kayak or a sailing dinghy you only move forward if everyone works together.
  • Orientation and reading the environment: where the wind comes from, how the water moves, which course to take.
  • Safety and independence: using a lifejacket, rules on the water and what to do if you capsize.
  • Environmental education: understanding and respecting the marine environment.

Groups rotate between activities so every pupil tries several and makes the most of their time on the water.

How to plan the session: before, during and after

Before the trip (in class)

  1. Explain the aim: what pupils will work on and why in the natural environment.
  2. Introduce basic ideas: where the wind blows from, parts of a boat, safety rules.
  3. Prepare with parents the consent form and the kit list.

During the day

  • Small groups at a ratio of 1 to 5, depending on the boat and the activity.
  • Rotating sessions: three 1-hour or two 90-minute sessions on a half day; three 2-hour or four 90-minute sessions on a full day.
  • Instructors from the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and a coordinator who sets the educational and organisational guidelines.

Afterwards (back at school)

  • Group reflection: what was hardest, how it was solved, what pupils learnt about the environment.
  • Assessment: observe cooperation, attitude to safety and respect for the environment.
  • Cross-curricular links: wind and tides in Science, orientation in Geography.

Safety in the outdoor water environment

This is the first thing teachers and parents ask about:

  • A sheltered setting: the inlet between the island and the coast is protected from the wind, with no currents or swell, and shallow, crystal-clear water.
  • Lifejackets are compulsory throughout every session on the water.
  • Equipment suited to the pupils’ age and level, in perfect condition.
  • The relevant insurance and permits for every activity.
  • Facilities on the beach itself: changing rooms with showers, space for rucksacks, a classroom and a shaded picnic area.
